Book Arts Guild of Central Florida
The Book Arts Guild of Central Florida, a Central Florida-based community group of book arts enthusiasts, sought a logo to promote the Guild and its events. It also wanted to transfer all the content from its previous website to a new Squarespace one with a fresh design and reorganized content.
My idea phase involved sketching and jotting down ideas and concepts, as well as reminders of what to include in the logo presentation. Ideas included incorporating stacks of books, a folded zine, a bookbinding technique or tool, and an overall handmade feeling. Next came experimenting with some of the sketches and ideas in Illustrator. Although I tested a guild shield, open pages of a book, and different tools, the zine approach with a linocut font resonated best.
I created versions of the logo that could be used in horizontal as well as vertical and square applications. I also developed two patterns that could be used as backgrounds: one that emphasized different stitching along book spines and another that showcased an accordion book fold. The color palette I chose echoed a popular letterpress poster for the Guild.
I assembled all these elements in a presentation, which includes font suggestions and mockups of how the logo can be used most effectively. The scraps of colored construction paper underscore the handmade feel.
The Guild approved the logo and began incorporating it into its promotional materials in September 2023. Once the Guild approved the new logo and branding guidelines, I incorporated them when I designed the Guild’s new Squarespace website, which went live in January 2024.
Cordyceps Vs.
Alyssa Gillon is a potter who lives in Oregon and specializes in creating nature-inspired hand-built ceramics. She had a logo idea for her business, Cordyceps Vs, and enlisted my help with polishing it up and discovering the best color palette.
The final design is scrappy and quirky and has a sense of humor that reflects the sorts of pieces Alyssa creates. I provided different versions of the logo, including all-white and all-black versions to be used on busy and/or low-contrast backgrounds. The vibrant orange was a clear choice for the cordyceps, with cream and charcoal gray serving as neutrals. I then developed a brief branding document to help guide future applications.

Description
When I moved into a new house in 2022, one thing I missed about my previous address was the volunteer neighborhood association, which was very well organized and made residents feel like part of the community. I wanted to recreate that experience, so when I found a casual Facebook group for my new neighborhood, I reached out to the administrator about establishing a neighborhood organization. When the admin moved shortly afterward, I took over moderator duties and built more structure by creating a logo for the neighborhood and initiating and writing a monthly Substack newsletter featuring nonpartisan issues that impact or interest neighbors.
Though the Sunshine Gardens + Fairbanks Shores Neighborhood Group is not ready to formalize with the county, the organization has seen positive results in terms of engagement and connection. I monitor group member requests carefully to limit spam accounts and ensure only actual neighbors are approved to view and post content. Group membership has increased by 153% in the past two years, and there are still plenty of neighbors to reach. Members participate in conversations, share information, and contribute to a list of neighbor-approved business and service recommendations. As a result, members are now more familiar with their neighbors.
One neighbor even wrote me the following message: "I appreciate your efforts to bring a sense of community to our neighborhood! This was my seventh Halloween in this neighborhood, and I’ve never seen so many trick-or-treaters. I feel like it was because of the Facebook group. Keep it up. 👍🏼"
